How to Get a DC Cannabis Card (DC Residents)
If you are 21 years or older, you can apply for your card by simply self-certifying—no doctor’s note required.
Required Documents:
- A current 2×2 headshot-style photograph
- A government-issued photo ID with a DC address
- OR government-issued ID plus a document proving DC residency (utility bill, lease, etc.)
Application Process:
- Gather your documents before beginning—your application cannot be saved mid-process
- Visit the ABCA Medical Cannabis Portal
- Upload all required documents and submit your form
- You’ll receive an email confirmation immediately
- A digital approval letter will be emailed to you once reviewed
Applications are typically processed quickly. Be sure to add ABCA.CannabisInfo@dc.gov to your safe sender list to avoid missing correspondence.
Optional: Order a physical MMJ card for $10 (digital cards are accepted at most dispensaries, including Monko)

DC Residents Under 21 or Applying with a Doctor’s Recommendation
If you are between 18 and 20 years old, or if you prefer to certify with a healthcare provider, you’ll need to submit a valid physician recommendation dated within the past two years.

Visiting DC? Get a Temporary or Reciprocal Medical Card
If you’re not a DC resident, there are two ways you can legally access cannabis while visiting the city.
Option 1: Temporary Registration
DC offers a streamlined non-resident patient registration process with terms ranging from 3 days to 1 year.
- 3-day card: $10
- 30-day card: $20
- 90-day card: $50
- 180-day card: $75
- 365-day card: $100
Applications are completed online, and approval is typically immediate. Temporary cards are digital and can be used at licensed dispensaries the same day.
Option 2: Reciprocity
DC honors valid medical cannabis cards from approved states and territories. If your state is on the reciprocity list, you can shop legally at Monko by presenting:
- Your valid out-of-state medical cannabis card
- A government-issued photo ID
