Washington, D.C. transitioned to a medical cannabis model in April 2025. Understanding the application process is crucial.
Here’s your comprehensive guide to getting certified:
For DC Residents
Required Documents:
- Choose ONE of the following:
- Healthcare practitioner recommendation (issued within 2 years)
- Self-certification (if 21 or older)
- Current 2×2 face photo
- Choose ONE of the following ID combinations:
- DC DMV REAL ID OR
- Proof of DC residency PLUS government-issued photo ID
Application Process
- Gather all required documents before starting
- Applications cannot be saved mid-process
- All documents must be ready for upload
- Submit your application
- You’ll receive a confirmation email
- Add ABCA.CannabisInfo@dc.gov to your safe senders
- Review Process
- Applications are reviewed for completeness
- Additional documentation may be requested via email
- Digital approval letter sent upon completion
- Optional Items
- Caregiver application if needed
- Reduced fee income documentation
- Physical card ($10 fee applies)
For Non-DC Residents
- Separate application process required
- Use the Non-DC Resident Adult Patient Application form
- Similar documentation requirements apply
Reciprocity Program
DC honors valid medical cannabis cards from other states:
- Present your current out-of-state medical card
- Bring government-issued photo ID
- No additional DC certification needed
