The basics of cannabis:

  • Cannabinoids – Cannabis produces over 100 different chemical compounds known as cannabinoids. Two primary cannabinoids are THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol).
  • Endocannabinoid System (ECS) – The human body is made of a complex cell-signaling system involved in regulating various physiological processes. The ECS plays a crucial role in maintaining homeostasis within the body. Cannabinoids from cannabis interact with the ECS, influencing processes such as mood, appetite, sleep, pain and immune response.
  • Terpenes – These aromatic compounds are found in my plants, including citrus fruits, herbs and cannabis. They contribute to the plant’s distinctive aroma and may offer therapeutic effects. The combination of cannabinoids and terpenes is believed to create an “entourage effect,” enhancing the overall impact of the plant’s compounds.
  • Strains – Different variations of the plant provide distinct characteristics. Indica strains are often associated with relaxation and sedation, while sativa strains are linked to energy and creativity. Hybrid strains combine the characteristics of their parent plants.
  • THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) – The most prevalent cannabinoid, THC is the psychoactive compound in cannabis responsible for the euphoric “high” sensation. It binds to cannabinoid receptors in the brain, affecting mood, perception and cognition.
  • CBD (Cannabidiol) – The second most prevalent cannabinoid, CBD is non-psychoactive and known for its potential therapeutic benefits. It is being researched for anti-inflammatory, analgesic and anxiolytic properties.
  • Cannabis consumption methods – Smoking and vaping involve inhaling cannabinoids, providing rapid onset of effects. Edibles and beverages require absorption of the cannabinoids by way of the digestive tract for delayed yet more intense and longer lasting effects. Concentrates can be vaped, dabbed or infused into edibles and offer extreme potency. A few drops of a tincture can be placed under the tongue or added to foods or beverages. Topicals are applied directly to the skin for localized treatment.
